New MRT line starts Nov. 15

A new MRT line will commence operation on November 15: With the opening of the Songshan line, Taipei’s Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system takes another step towards completing the vision of a comprehensive public transportation network. The fast, economical, and convenient Taipei MRT service now adds a third east-west bound route to the grid, passing through the "Wall Street" of Taipei - Nanjing East Road - and connecting to Taiwan Railways Songshan Station and the future Airport line. Around 1.8 million passengers take the MRT every day, with prospects predicting that after the Songshan line opening, passenger numbers might increase up to 2 million. Songshan line spreads along 8.5-kilometer and counts eight underground stops, of which six are transfer stations to the Blue, Red, Orange, and Brown lines: Ximen, Beimen, Zhongshan, Songjiang Nanjing, Nanjing Fuxing, Taipei Arena, Nanjing Sanmin, and Songshan. The new green Songshan line will help spread passengers throughout the MRT system more efficiently, relieving pressure along the Bannan blue line. According to the city government, all trips on the new line will be free during the first month of operations for EasyCard holders, with a 10 percent discount for passengers who switch between the Xindian and Tamsui lines. Besides, the MRT’s broadcasting system will no longer use Chinese transliteration to refer to the MRT lines in English, but use numbers instead:

Line 1: Wenhu Line 文湖線
Line 2: Tamshui-Xinyi Line 淡水信義線
Line 3: Songshan-Xindian Line 松山新店線
Line 4: Zhonghe-Xinlu line 中和新蘆線
Line 5: Bannan Line 板南線
